Silvio Meier was active in East Berlin's left-wing, self-organized movement in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He co-founded the Environmental Library, was part of the GDR opposition, and in 1987 co-organized the "Element of Crime" concert at Zion Church, which was the target of a Nazi attack. At the end of December 1989, he and his friends occupied the vacant Schreinerstraße 47 in Berlin-Friedrichshain. The squatted buildings—as well as left-wing people in general—were frequently subjected to attacks by neo-Nazis during this time. Silvio and his friends fought back against the growing racism and fascism. This cost him his life on November 21, 1992, in a dispute with a group of young neo-Nazis at the Samariterstraße subway station.
A memorial plaque in the subway station commemorates him; for more than ten years, a street and a prize for civil courage have been named after Silvio Meier.
