BEN LEHMANN – doublebass

As a member of Gunter Hampel’s Galaxie Dream Band, he came to Europe, where he soon became one of the busiest jazz musicians. He is now highly active in the Berlin jazz scene in particular. OBSiDiAN / Rupp–Rößler–Hall

OBSiDiAN

Vojta Drnek (prepared accordeon)
Isabel Rößler (bass)
Jan Leipnitz (drums)

There is no long-standing tradition of a free jazz trio featuring accordion, bass, and drums. OBSiDiAN however makes you feel as if like there was, and that they are building on it with great respect and also an infectious joy and love for collective music-making. Energetic and groovy passages are interwoven with deep and meditative soundscapes, constructed with unique and weird sounds of prepared accordion of Vojta Drnek, gentle, yet explosive drums of Jan Leipnitz and the vast range of expression of Isabel Rößler’s bass.

Rupp–Rößler–Hall

Olaf Rupp (guitar)
Isabel Rößler (bass)
Samuel Hall (drums)

Rupp–Rößler–Hall is an all-acoustic band of equal voices, where it’s more about layering textures and structures than supporting a soloist.

Invocation: Hub Hildenbrand (guitar, voice) & Canberk Ulas (duduk)

Doors: 19:30

Hildenbrand’s music is defined by the restless nature of a seeker. Over the years his explorations have taken him to a variety of places and spaces, nonetheless, his destination continues to be the ever elusive vanishing point: the realm of the mystical. Ultimate truth and pure beauty remain forever on the horizon. His is a journey into the core of music.
By merging elements from ethno and world music, European contemporary Jazz, neoclassical, cinematic sounds, and the singer-songwriter tradition, he unfolds a multifaceted sonic world.
On this special occasion Hub will be joined by Turkish duduk player Ustad Canberk Ulas.

Rəhman Məmmədli & Band

Master of Azerbaijani Gitara Music

Rəhman Məmmədli’s blazing, psychedelic guitar music sprang from one of the most tumultuous and transformative periods in Azerbaijan’s history, capturing both the spirit and the contradictions of its time. In the years since, he has become the emblem of Azerbaijan’s gitara music – a unique subculture that developed around the electric guitar. Next to the late Rüstəm Quliyev, whose „Azerbaijani Gitara“ (Bongo Joe Records, 2020) introduced the West to this unique genre, which often sounds like Surf Music to untrained ears, Rəhman is the absolute don of this style – often going live on social media for hours on end, shredding.

LES FLÂNEUSES: JOURNEY (Alexandra Cárdenas, Caroline Siegers)

Doors: 19.00

LES FLÂNEUSES: JOURNEY

Flânerie was long considered a male activity (while street women were either beggars or prostitutes), but a lot of female art and thought is inspired by the experience of a walk in the city. Nevertheless, flâneuses seem to have an element of transgression: they go where they‘re not supposed to. Alexandra Cárdenas and Caroline Siegers take us on their very own musical journey, weaving their street adventures into their performance. Alexandra Cárdenas is producing her own independent code on stage, Caroline Siegers performs with her custom built MIDI controllers, both very inclined to leave the paved roads at any time. 3 Sets à 20 minutes.

Mohammad Reza Mortazavi (Polyphonic Percussion), Julius Gabriel (Saxophone Explorer)

Doors: 19.00

MOHAMMAD REZA MORTAZAVI
(POLYPHONIC SOLO PERCUSSION)

The diverse sound of tonbak and daf has always fascinated Mortazavi. It connects him with an understanding of music and movement that is as multifaceted as it is constantly evolving. His musical ideas transcend traditional techniques and ways of playing both instruments. Mortazavi describes finding a balance between concentration and letting go as the core element of his musical work: a constantly changing movement in which the boundaries of body and mind dissolve into one another. Mortazavi directs his focus exclusively on music, detached from the instrument and national-cultural narratives, in pursuit of the idea of a universal music in which something human connects in a profound way.

JULIUS GABRIEL
(TWIN & PERCUSSION SAXOPHONE)

Julius Gabriel is a saxophonist whose work explores the boundaries and intricacies of his instrument. He delves into the dynamic interplay between corporeality, acoustics, transcendence, and hypnosis. His musical foundation is deeply rooted in improvisation, drawing inspiration from an eclectic spectrum of genres. A virtuoso, in an existentialist sense, presenting his brand new record „Tales from the Subterranean“.

Aki Takase & Alexander von Schlippenbach (piano 4 hands) (Jazz)

Doors: 19.00

„They are having a conversation within the medium of sound. But they complement one another in a way that makes any stylistic differentiation irrelevant. With all the transparency in the course of their playing the dialogical principle opens out into an holistic piano language. What counts is freedom and the responsibility to create something new, driven by the awareness of continuous change.“

„One of Europe’s premier free jazz bandleaders, pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach’s music mixes free and contemporary classical elements, with his slashing solos often the link between the two in his compositions.“

As a solo pianist, Larry presents a wide range of music, from songs of the 1920s to Jazz pieces by Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington to his most recent original compositions.

Limpe Fuchs (Piano Solo)

Limpe Fuchs is a legend in the experimental music scene. In the late sixties, this percussionist drummed on self-made instruments, together with her then husband Paul Fuchs, in the Ensemble Anima. During that time, Limpe and Paul Fuchs cooperated with the classic pianist star Friedrich Gulda, as well as with jazz luminaries like Albert Mangelsdorff, and continually attracted the interest of their audiences in new constellations. Limpe Fuchs‘ solo performance with „variable wood and stone rows, ringing bronze in the pendulum strings, and a variety of skin and bronze drums“ is a rare occasion to witness one of the early avant-gardists of the scene from the old Federal Republic Of Germany. She attempts, while playing live, to develop her musical ideas from the „resonance of the location where the performance takes place“ – „to make music in the flow of time, with simplicity and emotion“! Her main concern is to sensitize the process of hearing: „Every tone is a sensation. Listening instead of shutting one’s ears. Establishing silence.“

Erlend Apneseth Trio
(Contemporary Norwegian Wood)

Erlend Apneseth (Hardanger fiddle, mora harp)
Stephan Meidell (guitar, electronics)
Øyvind Hegg-Lunde (drums, percussion)

A new Northern star that shines from Norway!
Erlend Apneseth Trio’s first album, „Det Andre Rommet“, earned glowing praise in Norway and abroad, and received both a Norwegian Folk Music Award in the open category and a nomination for Spellemannsprisen (the Norwegian Grammy). The BBC Music Magazine gave it the highest possible rating, and wrote: „The diversity of moods, styles, settings – and the track sequence – make for an enthralling listen.“ MOJO praised the trio’s „close, intuitive compositions groaning, roiling and clattering with a raw exploratory life, creating a wild new strain of Norwegian folk tunes that move, appropriately, from sun-dappled utopianism to the bleakest noir netherworld.“ The trio returned a year later with a masterly, poetic and surprising album, „Åra“, where the musicians sound more cohesive than ever. The album was once again nominated for Spellemannsprisen in the open category, and got overwhelming reviews both in Norway and internationally.

Zea (The Ex – guitar) & Xavier Charles (clarinet)

Since 2008 Zea has been the solo project of Arnold de Boer. He’s also a singer and guitarist in legendary Dutch band The Ex. Before 2008 Zea was a duo and earlier a five piece band, but the songs were always written, arranged, recorded and produced by De Boer. His label, Makkum Records was formed in 2009 with intention to release his own projects, but since 2012 the label has offered many other eccentric releases.

Xavier Charles is an amazing clarinet player from France working mostly in the international improvised music scene. The combination with the open minimal guitar play of Zea (Arnold de Boer) works like a treat.

Santur, kamancheh, gheychak, tombak and ney are instruments which can be traced back to Persian antiquity and because of this, transport the listener with their unique sonic qualities as well as their stark yet intricate performance practices. Dastgah-e Chahargah, one of the less commonly performed of the twelve modal systems in classical Persian music today, invokes vitality, courage and spiritual optimism – qualities that we desperately need in today’s world!
